Chief of Surgery
Dr Gerard Sormann is the Chief of Surgery at the Centre. He has a long and distinguished career in cosmetic and plastic surgery. He is:
- A Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS)
- A member of the Australian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPS)
- A member of the Society of European Plastic Surgery Workshop
- A member of the International Federation of Hand Surgery Societies
- A committee member of the International Quadriplegic Hand Congress
He has worked and trained extensively overseas in England, France, USA and South America, including:
- Queen Victoria Hospital (UK) world-renowned Plastic and Reconstructive Unit
- Columbia University Medical School, New York
- Interplast as a volunteer reconstructive surgeon in underdeveloped countries in the Asia Pacific Region
In Australia, Dr Gerard Sormann:
- is the former head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgical and Faciomaxilliary Units at the Austin Hospital
- specialised in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Victorian Plastic Surgery Unit
- was a lecturer at Melbourne University in Plastic Surgery
Dr Gerard Sormann also has highly specialised achievements in surgical and research advancements, as well as his position as Chief of Cosmetic Surgery at the Centre:
- He heads the hand reconstruction surgical team at the spinal injuries units for hospitals in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. This surgery returns hand and arm functions to quadriplegic patients through muscle and nerve reconstruction and by implanting bionic devices
- He founded and continues to be Medical Director of the Quadriplegic Hand Foundation Inc., which raises money for Quadriplegics to undergo this life changing hand surgery
- He founded and continues to act as a director of Wolfe Research Pty Ltd, which is developing new generation bionic implants to restore greater hand and arm functions to quadriplegics
